After about a dozen hours of research and shopping around I decided to get one for me and my wife to share as a secondary upstairs gaming setup. The short story is you won't find a laptop with these specs for this price anywhere else. There's computers on Amazon listed for 200 dollars more than this one that have the same processor/gpu power with hard drives that have half the space. For this price point there's nothing similar available. We liked it so much we got another one. The shipping was actually faster than what it said at purchase (about five days). The 17 inch screen is nice too. I don't think I could go back to a 15 inch laptop. For those not so tech savvy, no this won't run the latest games on ultra high with 100+ fps. You're going to have to spend about 500 dollars more to achieve that. The only issues I ran into was that on the first one the GPU was not detected automatically so I had to manually download the driver from the NVIDIA website and It took me about an hour to realize that to turn on the webcam there's a button combo on keyboard you have to press. The webcam won't even show up under hidden/disabled devices until you use this. Now that I know about it, I actually like this feature since you can use the same keys to completely disable the webcam if you're the paranoid type.
The red keyboard is really annoying but I, and you, will probably get used to it. Very hard to see any of the specialty items above keys. The speed is great. The keyboard layout is odd, the delete key is not where it's always been, but rather above the numbers. It's very hard to see the function keys and their combined uses needs to be figured out as reading the instructions that come with it is not possible, even with a magnifier. I downloaded the manual which is really generic but was able to locate the function key combinations. For instance to turn on the backlit keyboard it's Fn and the - sign, also used to brighten, to dim it's Fn and the + sign, completely backwards to what you would intuitively think. Typing is comfortable, speed is great, but some things need getting used to. I've used it for about a week and slowly getting to like it.
My only complaint, thus far, are the speakers. The speakers are not great, so I just use a bluetooth speaker to compensate. Other than that, the laptop is amazing. Nice, fast SSD and both the cpu and gpu hold up great playing games so far. My old laptop was also an MSI and I used it for over 8 years and it still works. After having such a good experience with my old MSI laptop, I decided to go with MSI again and I have not been disappointed. Plus I love that it takes less than 15 seconds to boot up.
